The science

The same molecule your immune system makes.

Cut your hand. Within minutes, white blood cells called neutrophils flood the site, swallow what got in, and trigger something immunologists call the respiratory burst. Inside that cell, an enzyme named myeloperoxidase takes ordinary chloride — salt, basically — and converts it into hypochlorous acid.

HOCl. It's the chemical weapon your immune system has used to fight bacteria since before you could walk. You have been manufacturing it your whole life.

That is the active in JockShock. Not something inspired by it. Not a synthetic cousin. The same molecule, made outside the body instead of inside it. It's also the active in the saline wound sprays sold behind the pharmacy counter — which is the short answer to how one bottle can be safe on skin at use concentration and still do real work on a helmet liner.

Why it isn't bleach

Both come from the chlorine family, and that's where it ends. Bleach is mostly hypochlorite — OCl⁻ — and that minus sign is the whole story. It carries a negative charge, and bacterial cell walls are negatively charged too. Like poles. It gets pushed away before it can do anything.

HOCl carries no charge at all. It's small, electrically neutral, and moves through a cell wall about as easily as water does. Same element, radically different behavior — which is why hypochlorous acid is measured in the literature at tens of times more effective than the hypochlorite ion that makes up most of a bleach bottle.

It also explains the things you'd notice. No bleach smell. No stripped color on a jersey. No rotted stitching. You aren't trading your gear for a clean-smelling bag.

Why your gear smells in the first place

Here's the part most people have backwards: sweat is basically odorless. It's mostly water, salt, and a handful of amino acids. If sweat were the problem, a rinse would fix it.

The smell is what happens after. Bacteria living on your skin and inside your gear treat that sweat as food. Feed them the amino acid leucine and they hand back isovaleric acid — the sour, cheesy note that hits you when a cleat comes out of the bag. That specific reaction, run mostly by a common skin bacterium called Staphylococcus epidermidis, is the documented source of foot odor. Elsewhere on the body the same process yields thioalcohols, sulfur compounds that read as onion and are pungent in literally trace amounts.

Then gear does the one thing that makes it worse. A gym bag is warm, damp, dark, and closed — the ideal incubator. Foam and padding hold moisture for days. The gear isn't just carrying the smell; it's running the reaction.

Which is why air freshener fails in a way you can predict. Perfume puts a smell on top of a smell. The compounds are still there, the bacteria are still fed, and the cover-up quits long before the source does — usually somewhere around the drive home. Going after the source isn't a stronger version of masking. It's a different mechanism.
